How is the Float Room Cleaned?
When your float is over the Ocean Float room has a powerful, but quiet magnetic-drive pump with a high capacity filtration system which cleans the float solution a minimum four times whilst each client is showering and dressing. Sterilisation is automatic, eliminating the manual addition of chemicals. The high saline content of the floatation environment ensures that nothing harmful can survive within the tank.
What do I wear in the float room?
We recommend that you don’t wear anything so that you can feel truly free and so you are not distracted by your clothing. However, we completely understand this can be daunting the first time, so you can wear a swimsuit if you like. You have your own private room to do as you please.
Can I drown if I fall asleep?
No. Some people fall asleep, but the water is so buoyant that you stay afloat.
What is Epsom Salts and is it good for the skin?
Epsom salt is a magnesium-rich mineral used for centuries to improve sleep and reduce pain, cramping, headaches, and muscle ache. There is 500kg of Epsom salts dissolved in our float room. Epsom salt also makes dry skin feel soft and supple and can remove impurities, toxins, oil and dirt from the skin. The magnesium in the Epsom salt is naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial and therefore helps to improve skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and athlete’s foot.
Will the salt dry or damage my hair?
As long as you wash and condition your hair after each float, the magnesium in the Epsom Salt will improve the condition of your hair and scalp, and not damage it.
What is the best time of day to float?
Floating at any time of day is good. Some people like to float early in the morning to clear their mind or increase focus for the day ahead. Some people prefer midday/early afternoon to split the day up and rest – like an afternoon nap. Others prefer floating in the evening so they can simply relax afterwards, or to maximise the sleep-improving benefits. We recommend trying each time of day and seeing what works for you.
I’m pregnant, can I float?
Absolutely! There will be a womb within a womb! Floating can relieve a lot of the aches and pains caused by pregnancy. If you are in your third trimester or have any concerns, please consult with your physician before coming in.
Can I float when I am menstruating?
Yes, you can float when you’re menstruating - it can be the perfect way to nourish yourself, and to encourage your muscles to relax if you get cramps. Just follow the same process as when you go swimming.
I’m claustrophobic, can I float?
It’s a common worry, but that’s why we chose to have an Ocean Float Room instead of a pod. The room is much bigger than people expect – so big, in fact, that you can stretch out without touching the sides! If you do feel nervous, you can always leave the door open slightly, or have the inside light on for as long as you like – you’re in complete control. Once inside the room, people are usually surprised at how safe and relaxed they feel. It is 2430mm (96”) long, 1440mm (56”) wide, 2100mm (83”) minimal high.
Will I get dehydrated from floating?
Because of the high salt concentration in the water, floating can be slightly dehydrating. However, just counteract that by making sure you’re hydrated pre and post-float and you won’t notice any difference.
How long do the benefits last for?
Benefits such as reduced anxiety and improved sleep have been scientifically proven to last for several days after a single session. However, everyone is different, and results vary. If you float for longer or more regularly, then there is a cumulative effect on the benefits.
Should I let you know about any health conditions?
Yes, please let us know about any health conditions eg: diabetic, high or low blood pressure. If you have any concerns you should check with your doctor before floating.
Can I float with a skin condition?
Epsom salt can sting any areas of broken skin, so we recommend not floating during a flare-up of eczema or psoriasis. However, many people with recurrent eczema and psoriasis find that floating helps these conditions. Epsom salt is magnesium sulphate - and magnesium is naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial, which helps keep minor skin irritations clean. Floating also helps to reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone), and research has shown that flare-ups of eczema and psoriasis are often correlated with stress levels. Therefore, regular floating could help prevent further flare-ups. If you do want to float and have a flare-up, you can always use vaseline on the area to stop it from stinging so much. Check with your doctor about floating if you suffer from any skin conditions.
Can I float with low blood pressure?
Floating is proven to reduce blood pressure. Check with your doctor about floating if you suffer from low blood pressure
Can I float with epilepsy?
For safety reasons, we do not allow people with epilepsy to float.
How is floating different from sensory deprivation tanks or isolation tanks?
Floatation therapy is the same thing as sensory deprivation or isolation tanks, but they’ve been modernised and improved immeasurably since they were first popularised a few decades ago - and given a friendlier name!
What can I expect for my first float?
The majority of people emerge from their float feeling refreshed and relaxed, with a clearer head. The benefits are different for everyone, so it’s best to be open-minded about what you’ll experience. Sometimes it can take a few floats to learn how to switch off fully - so stick with it if you felt like you could have relaxed more deeply.
Is there a minimum age to float?
You must be over 16 years old to float - people under the age of 16 are not allowed to float due to health and safety regulations.
Are there any weight restrictions?
There are no weight limits – the salt can hold anyone afloat.
Can I drink alcohol and float?
Being under the influence in the float room would be an unpleasant experience. We don’t recommend it, and we don’t allow people to float under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
What if I dye my hair?
This is generally no problem. If your dye is fresh, (less than a week), we recommend you don't float. We’d hate for you to damage expensive hair work. We’ll be happy to help you reschedule if necessary. However, if you use keratin treatments, it’s recommended that you avoid saltwater, and that includes float rooms. If you have any concerns ask your hairdresser before you float.
